When not behind the bar Barry can also be seen at various Keighley Town Hall functions acting as the Mace Bearer to Keighley's Mayor. Barry, who was appointed to the role about five years ago, says it makes an interesting change from pulling pints. Barry and Carol are also members of the local History Society and the Brown Cow is home to several clubs and societies who use its facilities for their meetings.

Barry & Carol took over the Brown Cow in 2003 and started making what should have always been a good pub into what is a good pub. Their efforts have been recognised and they have won the following awards from Camra, The Campaign for Real Ale. • February 2006 Nominated by the Keighley & Craven Branch of Camra as Pub of Yorkshire • Winter 2005/6 Pub of the Season Award as well as many others.
